How To Stop School Bullying
At schools, bullying most often happens in areas with little or no adult supervision. It can occur in virtually any area in or around the school building, though it most often happens in gym, exploratory classes, corridors, bathrooms, classes that require teamwork and also at after-school activities such as sports practice etc.
Towards the end of the 20th century, the United States saw a major increase in school shootings – the most infamous being the shootings at Columbine. Many of the children responsible for these shootings claimed that they were victims of bullying at school and that they turned to committing these violent acts only after the school authorities continually failed to do anything about the bullying.
In many of these cases, the families of the victims sued both the schools and the families of the shooters.
These shocking incidents have helped to prompt schools in many countries to tackle bullying, with initiatives designed to educate students, teachers and school authorities in intervention, prevention and other techniques as a form of peer support.
Recently, as a result of bullying at school, many of the bullies’ victims have been suing their tormentors for infliction of emotional distress, and also their school under the principle of joint and several liability.
Bullying at school can cause a multitude of problems for the victim, and it is important that parents recognise early signs. Some more obvious pointers of bullying at school can be: unexplained cuts and bruises, torn clothes, the ‘loss’ of possessions, and more. These can be many more subtle signs of a problem which can be missed if the parent does not know what to look out for.
